Trucks should look tough. Last year’s Silverado looks
tougher than most but Chevy found a way to dial it up with the 2014 Chevrolet
Silverado. Although lighter and more fuel efficient, this new truck is squarer
and even more muscular. The soft curves have been replaced with hard edges and
lines. The front bumper is cleaner and there’s more chrome, especially in the
higher trim levels.
The doors have seen two significant changes: they no longer
extend up into the roofline and the rear doors on the Crew Cab are hinged at
the front rather than the rear. This makes climbing in and out of the back
easier than ever and improved seals make for a quieter interior. Climbing into
the bed has been made easier too, with the new CornerStep rear bumper and hand
grip pockets. Other changes include new body mounts for a smoother, more
comfortable ride, electric power steering (another step to better gas mileage),
and new engine options.
The base engine, standard in the 1WT, 2 WT, and LT trims, is
a 4.3 liter EcoTec 3 V6. This sends 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque
through a six-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels, or all four if
the AWD option box is checked. A 5.3 liter EcoTec 3 V8 is also available. This
produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet and comes standard in the LTZ trim.
Anyone wanting even more power and torque will be pleased to know that Chevy
has a 6.2 liter V8 available this fall.
Interestingly, the 1WT and 2WT trims are not as basic as
their “Work Truck” designations imply. Instead of carpeted flooring, there is a
more practical graphite-colored, rubberized-vinyl floor covering. Air
conditioning and power windows are standard and the front seat is a 40/20/40
split bench while the Crew Cab gets a 60/40 rear folding bench. Outside, the
2WT is distinguished by chrome bumpers and grille surround plus deep-tinted
glass and stainless-steel clad 17 inch wheels. Heated power-adjustable mirrors,
Bluetooth connectivity, and MyLink with a 4.2 inch screen are also standard.*
LT trim adds a new “EZ-Lift and Lower” tailgate and
17-inch alloys, but the inside is where the upgrades are most noticeable.
Carpeted with vinyl floor mats, there is cloth seating with locking under-seat
storage, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, and
attractive brushed metal-look trim in the dashboard.
In addition, the LTZ gets MyLink with an 8 inch screen,
leather trim, and heated ten-way power front seats plus dual-zone automatic
climate control and a power sliding rear window. Outside, fog lamps, 18-inch
alloys, and chrome mirror caps and door handles add more sparkle while a rear
view camera assists safe reversing. Notable options include the Z71, LT
Convenience, All Star Edition, and LTZ Plus packages. The former enhances
off-road capabilities, Convienience and All Star add some of the LTZ equipment,
and LTZ Plus brings an impressive Bose audio system and power-adjustable
pedals.
Payload and towing capabilities are key criteria for a
pickup truck, and the 2014 Silverado turns in a strong performance. Crew Cab
models can handle as much as 2,000 pounds in the bed and up to 11,500 pounds on
the hitch when equipped with the 5.3 liter and the 3.73 rear axle. All-wheel
drive drops these numbers slightly.
The 2013 Silverado was an impressive truck, but the new 2014
